Glossary of Standard Terms

Addendum
An additional or supplemental publication that is added to an existing document, usually at the end (plural: addenda).

Amendment
An alteration to an existing document made by correction, addition, or deletion, usually to provide clarification or improvement.

Corrigendum
A list of corrections of errors in a book, document, or other publication (plural: corrigenda).

DIS (Draft International Standard)
A standard that is being distributed for public review in draft format, before official publication and release.

DRM (Digital Rights Management)
Refers to technologies used by publishers or copyright owners to control access to or usage of digital data or hardware, and to restrictions associated with a specific instance of a digital work or device.

EN (European Normalization)
Standards that have been adopted and approved for use in the European Union receive the designation EN.

Erratum
A statement of an error and its correction inserted, usually on a separate page or slip of paper, in a book or other publication; corrigendum (plural: errata).

FDIS (Final Draft International Standard)
The final draft of an international standard distributed for public review before final publication.

File Open
A 3rd party plug-in which is required to open and read SPDFs (secure PDFs).

Hard Copy
A printed version of a document.

ICS (International Classification for Standards)
An international classification system for technical standards. It is designed to cover every economic sector and virtually every activity where technical standards may be used.

ISBN (International Standard Book Number)
A unique, internationally utilized number code assigned to books for identification and inventory control.

International Adoption
International standards organizations such as ISO or IEC develop standards for use in international applications. EN, the European Normalization group may adopt the standard as a European "norm," which is a standard that can be applied within the EU. This would then be designed EN ISO. National standards organizations such as BSI or DIN may then adopt the standard as a national standard, to be applied specifically within that nation's boundaries. An ISO standard adopted as a European Norm (EN), than adopted as a British national standard would be designated BS EN ISO. The same standard may also be adopted as a German national standard and designated DIN EN ISO. The two standards, BS EN ISO and DIN EN ISO may be identical except for the language in which they are printed.

PDF (Portable Document Format)
An electronic file format available for immediate download that does not require FileOpen plug-in.

POD (Print on Demand)
A service offered by Accuris wherein customers request a printed version of a document not available as PDF, the files will be printed the same day as requested and shipped overnight.

Printed edition
A code, standard, technical report, or other document in hard copy or paper format.

(R with date)
This symbol means that a standard has been reaffirmed. Reaffirmation means that the standard has been reviewed and allowed to stand without revision. The original version is still the valid, in-force version of the standard.

RP (Recommended Practice)
A document that provides recommended methods and guidelines for a particular process.

Redlines
A redline document shows additions, deletions, and other formatting or content changes between two different versions of the same document.

SDO (Standards Developing Organization)
Any entity whose primary activities are developing, coordinating, promulgating, revising, amending, reissuing, interpreting, or otherwise maintaining standards that address the interests of a wide base of users outside the standards-developing organization.

SPDF (Secure Portable Document Format)
A secure electronic file available for immediate download that contains features preventing reproduction or distribution to other users. SPDF files require the FileOpen plug-in to be installed to open and read the document.

Single-user license
Authorizes the use of a document by one user on one computer.

Standard
A universally agreed-upon set of guidelines for interoperability.

Subscription
Multi-user access to a custom set of controlled documents delivered electronically in PDF format from a central server via a web browser. For information on organization subscriptions see Accuris Solutions.

Supplement
A part added to or issued as a continuation of a publication to correct errors or make additions.

TIR or TR (Technical Report)
An informative document containing technical information different from that published in a standard or normative document.

Withdrawn Standard
A withdrawn standard is no longer maintained by a particular committee, i.e., no future updates. This does not mean that the technical content is no longer valid. Many withdrawn standards are still in use.

ZIP File
A data compression and archive format. A ZIP file contains one or more files that have been compressed to reduce file size, for easier transportation or storage.
